Public awareness campaign targets extortion threats
BC Crime Stoppers launches a digital media campaign on June 26, 2025, to tackle rising extortion threats against the South Asian community. Funded by a $100,000 grant from the B. C. government, the 60-day campaign aims to educate individuals on recognizing and reporting extortion. Minister of Public Safety Garry Begg emphasizes that reporting is vital for community safety and crime resolution.
The campaign will be available in English and Punjabi and will utilize various platforms, including radio, social media, and television. Local police officials also stress the importance of early reporting, linking extortion cases to organized crime. The Province invests over $100 million annually to combat serious crime and enhance public safety measures. This initiative aligns with broader efforts supported by nearly $11 million from the federal government for anti-gang initiatives. Community engagement remains a priority to ensure victims receive the support they need.
