BC Coroners Service shares April 2025 unregulated drug-toxicity data
The BC Coroners Service reported 165 unregulated drug toxicity deaths in April 2025, reversing a six-month trend of fewer than 160 deaths per month. Among these, 68% of the victims were aged 30 to 59, and 77% were male, underscoring the demographic most affected by this crisis. Fentanyl remained the predominant substance detected, appearing in 68% of cases, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities accounted for 57% of the deaths, with Vancouver, Surrey, and Greater Victoria being the hardest-hit cities. Additionally, smoking was identified as the primary mode of drug consumption, with 64% of decedents using this method.
The report indicates that 47% of deaths occurred in private residences, highlighting the need for targeted interventions in these environments. This preliminary data is subject to change as investigations continue and more toxicological results are received, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the public health emergency.
