Airport improvements support economic growth
The Province of B. C. announced a $6. 2 million investment in airport upgrades through the Air Access Program, benefiting 16 regional airports. This funding will support vital projects such as runway improvements in Comox and Courtenay, and the establishment of a permanent heliport in Tipella to enhance air ambulance services.
Minister of Transportation Mike Farnworth highlighted the upgrades' role in improving connectivity for rural communities. Additional safety measures include wildlife-exclusion fencing at Fort St. James and upgraded weather monitoring at Fairmont Hot Springs. Since its inception in 2017, the B. C.
Air Access Program has committed over $70 million to 80 air facilities statewide. The program specifically targets facilities with fewer than one million passengers per year, ensuring focused support for smaller airports. Local leaders emphasize the program's importance for economic growth and community well-being. Applications for funding are accepted annually in November and December, allowing ongoing improvements to aviation infrastructure.
