New Coals of Newcastle Book Tells City's History

Newcastle, WALocal News

The Newcastle Historical Society has released 'The Coals of Newcastle, a Hundred Years of Hidden History 2020 Edition,' a meticulously revised account of the city’s coal mining legacy. Originally published in 1987, this new edition incorporates research from 14 historians, providing a deeper understanding of the coal industry's socio-economic impact on Newcastle. The book links the local mines to significant commercial markets, particularly in San Francisco, underscoring how coal sales contributed to the city's financial growth. Established in the 1860s, Newcastle was once the second largest town in King County, thriving until the industry's decline in 1963. The publication highlights the contributions of diverse groups, including Chinese and Black workers, and offers insights into their roles within the mining community.

With 188 pages of new research, previously unpublished photographs, and detailed maps, this edition serves as a vital resource for understanding one of Puget Sound’s earliest communities. Russ Segner, President of the Newcastle Historical Society, emphasized the importance of preserving this history. The book is currently available for purchase on Amazon for $30, making it accessible to those interested in local history.
