Orchid Awards Celebrate History, Stewardship, Community
The Moscow Historic Preservation Commission honored four projects with Orchid Awards for their dedication to preserving the city’s historical identity. At the ceremony, outgoing Mayor Art Bettge expressed appreciation for the winners, showcasing their commitment to Moscow’s heritage. Colin Mannex, executive director of the Kenworthy Performing Arts Center, accepted an award for the renovation of the theater's marquee, which was made possible by a $100,000 state grant. Carly Lilly shared her vision for the Garden Lounge in the Moscow Hotel, which underwent a significant transformation to create a botanical atmosphere. Homeowners Steven and Mary Shook restored the Tomer house, originally constructed in 1889-1890, to reflect its prosperous era of 1910-20.
Doug Wasankari was recognized for his work on the Wylie Lauder house, which involved raising the second story to repair the foundation while preserving its unique porch pillars. These projects highlight the community's commitment to honoring its historical roots as they pave the way for future generations. One vacancy remains on the Historic Preservation Commission, with applications available online.
