Historian Promotes Uniting Around Countrys 250th Birthday
At the Moscow Historic Preservation Commission’s Orchid Awards, public historian Dulce Kersting-Lark discussed the potential for national unity in the lead-up to America's 250th birthday in 2026. She drew parallels between past celebrations, such as the Centennial in 1876 and the Bicentennial in 1976, both marked by significant national division. Kersting-Lark highlighted how the Bicentennial ignited a broader appreciation for local history and conservation efforts. In Moscow, community initiatives have successfully nominated the McConnell Mansion and other sites for the National Register of Historic Places. She expressed hope that similar collaborations could emerge as the nation prepares for this milestone anniversary.
Kersting-Lark encouraged attendees to read the Declaration of Independence and reflect on its significance. The University of Idaho plans various educational programs and exhibits leading up to 2026, aiming to establish a central Historic District. The nomination for this district is currently under review by a state board in Boise.
