Commission Names Unity Nominees, Hears Antisemitism Complaint
The Moscow Human Rights Commission met on Tuesday and nominated Linda Pike and Lee Anne Eareckson for the Sheikh Community Unity Award, recognizing their contributions to community unity and human rights. The award ceremony is scheduled for November 6 at City Hall, where the mayor may select one or both nominees. Additionally, the commission addressed a grievance from William Janzer regarding a film shown at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre that he claims is antisemitic. Janzer’s advocacy led to a police trespass order against him after he communicated his concerns to theatre management. Chair Erin Agidius noted that the commission lacks authority to officially engage with private businesses but suggested that a social justice forum on antisemitism could be beneficial.
The commission also unanimously approved funding for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and a forum on supporting diverse learners. These discussions highlight ongoing community engagement with issues of diversity and inclusion. The Sheikh Award honors individuals dedicated to fostering community unity and human rights efforts.
