Newbill Memorial Art Considered For Police Station

Moscow, IDLocal News

The Moscow Arts Commission plans a memorial art installation for Officer Lee Newbill at the police station, aiming for completion by the 20th anniversary of his death on May 19, 2007. Officer Newbill was shot while responding to a call for assistance at the Latah County Sheriff’s Office. The commission solicited entries for a mural on a new concrete wall at City Shops and selected “Gargantuan Squirrels” as part of the Peanut Project, which celebrates local wildlife and honors Payroll Specialist Tara Lowe. Miriam Åkervall was appointed as the Poet Laureate for 2025-2027, showcasing the city’s investment in arts and culture. The commission emphasized a preference for art that integrates pathways at East City Park and plans further discussions before issuing a request for qualifications.

The next meeting is set for November 18, following the resignation of Chair Aaron Johnson due to increased responsibilities at the University of Idaho. The commission’s efforts underscore the significance of public art in community engagement and remembrance.
