From crumbling industrial ruin to hotel, restaurant and spa? Developer says its in the works.
Greg Koch, co-founder of Stone Brewing, plans to redevelop the long-abandoned Fruen Mill in north Minneapolis into a hotel, restaurant, and spa. He purchased the property for $500,000 and attended a Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association meeting to request support from local leaders. Koch has prioritized resolving infrastructure issues, collaborating with local police and fire departments to ensure safety and address the mill's troubled history. Erik Hansen, Minneapolis’ director of community planning, expressed enthusiasm for Koch's vision, stating it represents a significant step forward compared to past efforts by other developers. The Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission is scheduled to review Koch's request for a variance to circumvent floodplain regulations, with discussions indicating a willingness to work with the developer.
Local residents, including Utepils Brewing’s Dan Justesen, are eager to see the site transformed from a danger to a destination. The mill's location in a floodplain complicates development, but community support may help navigate these challenges. Koch's project represents a potential turning point for a site long marked by neglect.
