Tatars of Washington State celebrate Sabantuy in the shade

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Tatar community in Washington State celebrated their annual Sabantuy festival on June 8 at Lynndale Park, showcasing food, traditional dancing, and contests for children. Performances included dancer Grace Emiko Noor Nakamura and the Anadolu Turkish Folk Dance Group, along with live music and comedy acts. This year, Governor Bob Ferguson proclaimed June 8, 2025, as Sabantuy in Washington, recognizing the festival's cultural importance. Sabantuy has historical roots as a pre-Christian and pre-Muslim harvest festival, which was preserved during the Soviet era. The holiday has since become a premier celebration among the Tatar diaspora worldwide, including significant communities in Europe and Canada.

Approximately 10,000 Tatars reside in the United States, with Washington being home to a vibrant cultural group. The festival serves as a testament to the resilience and continuity of Tatar traditions in the face of historical challenges. It provides an opportunity for community bonding and cultural exchange.
