For sale Two retired state ferries. Dreamers need not apply

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Washington State Ferries is currently offering the decommissioned Hyak and Klahowya ferries for sale without a minimum bid, but significant challenges hinder potential sales. Both vessels have remained unsold for over a year following a failed contract with an Ecuadorian businessman who intended to scrap them. Deputy head John Vezina noted that selling retired vessels is more complicated than many realize, requiring rigorous regulatory compliance, including Coast Guard-approved towing plans. The Hyak and Klahowya were retired after their operational costs became prohibitive, and vital equipment has been removed, complicating their certification for service. If suitable buyers do not emerge soon, the agency may resort to recycling, but local facilities are not equipped to handle such large vessels.

This predicament parallels similar challenges faced by BC Ferries, leading to proposals for government investment in shipyard capabilities. Vezina expressed the urgency of finding buyers as the vessels occupy valuable space in the Eagle Harbor shipyard. Serious inquiries about the ferries are welcomed, but interest often does not progress far.
