Heres how local nonprofits help their communities stay housed, informed
The Washington West African Center (WAWAC) reported a dramatic increase in housing assistance applications, receiving 345 in 2024, up from 233 in the previous year. The Sutura Housing Project, launched in 2023, serves West African immigrants facing housing instability and provides essential services. Executive Director Pa Joof emphasized the critical need for housing among newly arrived migrants lacking local support networks. The project not only addresses housing needs but also offers English language classes and culturally relevant groceries to help integrate immigrants. Snohomish County aids the project through funds from the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Consolidated Homeless Grant, which focuses on homelessness prevention.
For the 2022-25 period, 33% of the county's CHG funds are allocated for these activities. In 2023, the county distributed about $1. 93 million to four local agencies, including WAWAC, to tackle these pressing issues. Joof expressed future goals to build a dedicated facility for the West African community, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance housing solutions.
