Lynnwood Councilmember Escamillas dog involved in multiple attacks, records show

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Lynnwood Councilmember Derica Escamilla’s dog, Sumo, was involved in two separate attacks, injuring three dogs and causing significant distress to their owners. One incident led to the euthanasia of a Pomeranian mix due to the owner's inability to afford emergency surgery, raising questions about veterinary billing practices. The Lynnwood Hearing Examiner ruled Sumo "potentially dangerous," noting that the injuries did not meet the legal threshold for a "dangerous animal. " Escamilla has since taken corrective actions, including training and safety precautions, to ensure similar incidents do not occur. The attacks took place in October 2024 and May 2025, with veterinary costs exceeding $16,000 for the injured pets.

Escamilla is seeking reelection amid these controversies, asserting that Sumo is a beloved family member and not a community danger. The case underscores the challenges of dog ownership and the implications for local governance. It also raises broader discussions about animal control policies and community safety.
