Community Transit says its expanding bus safety and security measures
Community Transit is set to enforce updated Rules of Conduct on Nov. 1 to enhance safety for customers and employees. The new guidelines clarify enforcement procedures, ensuring individuals receive proper notice and the opportunity to comply before facing exclusion. Additionally, social workers embedded in the agency can advocate for clients, allowing for the suspension of exclusions. Documentation of enforcement actions will support consistent data tracking across the system.
The agency has also expanded the Rules to include its Zip Shuttle services, which operate in multiple communities. A Security Operations Center, staffed daily, aims to strengthen security measures during operating hours. Community Transit has invested in a Transit Security Officer program, with plans for 35 officers by 2025 to reduce incidents requiring police intervention. CEO Ric Ilgenfritz highlighted the commitment to safety and security as foundational to the agency's operations.
