Teen Talk Helping families experiencing housing insecurity

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Maddy Bryant, a high school senior, dedicates her time to volunteering at YWCA’s Somerset Village, which provides permanent affordable housing to low-income families. Her hands-on approach includes organizing library resources, leading art projects, and playing with children, all while advocating for affordable housing in the area. The recent 2025 Point-in-Time Count revealed 1,140 individuals experiencing homelessness in Snohomish County, highlighting the urgency of the housing crisis. Maddy’s commitment stems from early experiences volunteering with her mother, which ignited her passion for community service. She believes in fostering empathy and understanding, stating that volunteering helps her see beyond her own struggles.

Maddy encourages community members to educate themselves on the complexities of poverty rather than assigning blame. She also welcomes donations of gently used books and toys, stressing the ongoing need for volunteer support at Somerset Village. Through her efforts, Maddy aims to break the cycle of poverty and create a nurturing environment for children in her community.
