Ecology Department invites public comment on aquatic plant, algae management permit process

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Ecology is revising its aquatic plant and algae management general permit to enhance the control of noxious aquatic weeds, which harm local ecosystems and recreational areas. The permit allows lake managers to utilize registered pesticides approved by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Ecology reviews these chemicals through an environmental impact statement to ensure compliance with environmental laws.

The department is soliciting public comment on the proposed changes as part of its five-year permit reissuance process. This update aims to incorporate stakeholder feedback and new scientific insights while ensuring that management solutions minimize environmental impact. Local authorities must apply for coverage under the permit if they opt to use registered pesticides as part of integrated pest management. The permit sets specific conditions for pesticide use to protect sensitive species and water quality. By updating this permit, Ecology seeks to better manage invasive species and their effects on Washington's waterways.
