Washington Launches "Simple As That" Campaign to Combat Littering

Lynnwood, WALocal News

The "Simple As That" campaign has been introduced by Washington state to tackle the pressing issue of littering, which sees approximately 38 million pounds of trash discarded each year in public spaces and along highways. The initiative is a joint effort involving the Department of Ecology, Department of Transportation, and the State Patrol, aimed at fostering personal responsibility among residents. Litter not only tarnishes the landscape but also poses threats to water quality and traveler safety. Governor Jay Inslee pointed out the financial burden of litter cleanup, which costs the state over $12 million annually, despite record efforts to collect litter. The campaign encourages residents to keep litter bags in their cars and properly dispose of waste, reinforcing the idea that small actions can lead to significant change.

It also promotes community engagement, urging individuals to educate friends and family on litter-free practices. By working together, Washingtonians can help protect the state's natural beauty and reduce the environmental impact of litter. The campaign's message is clear: everyone has a role to play in maintaining a clean environment.
