Another hydrogen developer exits regional clean energy project
Portland General Electric (PGE) and Mitsubishi Power have canceled plans for a hydrogen production complex near Boardman, Oregon, due to the exit of a critical project partner and difficult project economics. This decision raises concerns about the viability of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub as the U. S. Energy Department increases scrutiny of clean energy initiatives launched under the Biden administration. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has warned that funding could be terminated for projects that do not demonstrate substantial progress.
Elected officials in the region have advocated for low-emissions hydrogen as a means to create jobs and meet climate goals. The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub stated that project adjustments were anticipated during the early development stages. The cancellation follows the abandonment of a hydrogen factory project in Centralia, Washington, and the bankruptcy of Seattle-based First Mode. Meanwhile, remaining projects such as a $1. 5 billion green fertilizer factory plan to proceed, necessitating large volumes of affordable renewable electricity.
For instance, the green fertilizer plant will require approximately 300 megawatts of power, exceeding the current load capacity of Richland, Washington.
