Lynnwood, WALocal News

The Asian American Journalists Association convention took place in Seattle from July 30 to August 3, attracting approximately 1,400 attendees. The event included over 60 sessions and featured 270 speakers, highlighting the importance of representation in journalism. Managing Editor Nick Ng, a first-time participant, initially felt like an outsider but began to connect with others during panels, discussing topics like solution journalism and AI's role in reporting. Ng noted a session with veteran Asian American journalists, which inspired him and reinforced the need for diverse voices in media. Linda Shaw described solution journalism as evidence-based reporting on responses to social issues, contrasting it with the more common "problem journalism.

" Ng also shared insights on using AI for tasks like brainstorming and formatting press releases. Networking opportunities and a karaoke party marked the event's conclusion, providing a celebratory atmosphere. This convention was significant as it returned to Washington state after 26 years, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of journalism within Asian American communities.
