Seattle DoorDash charges continue for Edmonds man

Lynnwood, WALocal News

DoorDash continues to impose a $4. 99 Seattle Regulatory Response Fee on John Rumpelein, an Edmonds resident, for deliveries from Shoreline restaurants, leading to 25 charges since February 2025. This fee is mandated by Seattle's PayUp ordinance, which requires app-based services to pay drivers the minimum wage of $27. However, the unique overlap of ZIP codes between Seattle and Shoreline causes confusion, as the fee is incorrectly applied outside of Seattle. Following a report by My Neighborhood News Network, a Shoreline merchant learned no fees were charged to his restaurant orders and brought the issue to DoorDash's attention.

Rumpelein has received credits from DoorDash but continues to seek a resolution, prompting him to switch to GrubHub for future orders. He also intends to collaborate with local restaurants to raise awareness. Despite DoorDash's capability to rectify the situation with GIS technology, the charges persist. The ongoing nature of this issue highlights the complexities of regulatory fees in overlapping jurisdictions.
