Ecology proposes rules for statewide battery recycling program

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Washington state's new proposed battery recycling regulations will require manufacturers to implement comprehensive recycling systems for common battery types. The initiative, announced by the Department of Ecology, seeks to address the growing environmental and safety concerns regarding battery disposal. Peter Lyon highlighted that improper recycling can lead to significant safety hazards and environmental costs. The program will cover various batteries, including AA, AAA, and rechargeable types, while excluding large vehicle batteries. Currently, battery recycling is encouraged but not mandated, resulting in inconsistent services and improper disposal practices.

These new regulations aim to provide consistent, safe recycling options for residents across Washington. Public input is welcomed through various channels until September 10, 2025, with two virtual hearings scheduled. Final rule adoption will consider public feedback, emphasizing transparency and community involvement in environmental initiatives.
