Issaquah hiker has close call with black bear family

Issaquah, WALocal News

A close encounter between a hiker and a black bear family in Issaquah has raised awareness about bear safety as wildlife emerges from hibernation. Alexander Polt captured the moment on the Puget Power Trail, sharing his experience of the heart-pounding encounter with the mother bear and her cubs. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reported nearly 1,500 bear-related calls last year, emphasizing the need for residents to manage food sources to prevent dangerous interactions. Mountain biker Vince Haag urged hikers to maintain a safe distance from wildlife, especially in the spring when bear activity increases. Bears that lose their natural fear of humans can pose safety risks.

A recent incident involved the euthanization of a bear family that became too accustomed to human food. WDFW recommends securing trash and removing bird feeders to deter bears from entering neighborhoods. For more information on safe practices in bear country, residents can visit the WDFW website.
