Issaquah City Council Declares April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Issaquah, WAPublic Safety

The Issaquah City Council has officially recognized April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, with a goal to increase awareness of sexual violence and support for survivors. Deputy Council President Barbara de Michele delivered the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Mary Lou Pauly, emphasizing the alarming statistic that someone is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds in the United States. Karen Sharpe, COO of the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, accepted the proclamation and highlighted the heightened risks faced by marginalized communities. She also provided important resources for survivors, including a 24-hour resource line. The council calls for collective community action to challenge harmful attitudes that perpetuate sexual violence.

Throughout April, Issaquah will host events and initiatives to promote dialogue and support for survivors. Community involvement is strongly encouraged to create a safer environment for all residents. The proclamation serves as a critical step towards addressing this pervasive issue.
