Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador over 'administrative error'

Issaquah, WALocal News

Kilmar Armando Abrego-Garcia, a 29-year-old Maryland man, was erroneously deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration, which acknowledged the mistake as an "administrative error" in a recent court filing. Abrego-Garcia was arrested in Baltimore after picking up his son and subsequently detained in a facility known for its inhumane conditions. Since his deportation, his wife, Jennifer, has been unable to contact him, raising alarms about his safety in El Salvador. His attorney, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, argued that the government had multiple legal options to prevent the deportation but chose not to pursue them. Abrego-Garcia previously convinced an immigration judge of credible fears regarding his safety if returned to El Salvador, where he faces allegations of gang affiliation.

His lawyers assert that no evidence has been presented to support these claims. The U. S. government now contends it cannot order his return since he is in the custody of El Salvador. This situation highlights critical issues surrounding immigration enforcement and the treatment of detainees.
