From Plot to Plate Expanding the Impact of Community Gardening

Brian Smith, a resident of Westridge in Issaquah Highlands, has taken significant steps to combat food waste through a community gardening initiative that donates excess produce to the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank. Since starting this project in July 2024, Smith and his fellow gardeners have successfully donated over 70 pounds of fresh produce, which includes popular crops like tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, onions, and radishes. Many gardeners face challenges in maintaining their plots due to busy schedules, leading to surplus crops that would otherwise go to waste. Working alongside his neighbor Melanie, Smith has collected nearly 15 pounds of produce weekly during the high-yield months of July and August. This initiative not only addresses food waste but also enhances local food security by providing fresh, nutritious options to those in need.

Smith emphasizes the rewarding nature of gardening and the importance of community collaboration in achieving greater impact. He envisions expanding the project to other community gardens in Issaquah Highlands, recognizing the potential for increased donations and support. Ultimately, Smith’s efforts exemplify how local initiatives can bring communities together and foster a spirit of giving and sustainability.
