Black Artists of Change An Exhibition Honoring Black History Month

Issaquah, WALocal News

The "Black Artists of Change" exhibition at Blakely Hall Gallery, running from February 17-28, aims to honor Black History Month by showcasing a diverse collection of 28 works from 13 artists of the Onyx Fine Arts Collective. Robert Horton, a board member and featured artist, emphasizes the exhibition's role in transforming perceptions of American culture through the lens of Black visual arts. A public reception on February 27 invites the community to engage directly with the artists and experience performances from Living Voices, which highlight the often-overlooked contributions of Black women in aviation during World War II. The program "Fly For Freedom" specifically celebrates these contributions, emphasizing themes of resilience and empowerment. Each participating artist brings forth unique narratives and styles, contributing to a rich dialogue about identity and cultural heritage.

This exhibition not only seeks to educate but also to inspire discussions about social justice and the power of art in shaping societal narratives. By bridging historical context with contemporary artistic expressions, the event fosters a deeper understanding of the ongoing impact of Black artists in America. This initiative represents a significant cultural moment for the Issaquah community, encouraging reflection and engagement with vital aspects of Black history.
