Rising After the Storm Rebuilding Squak Mountain
An extratropical cyclone struck the Issaquah area on November 19, 2024, unleashing winds exceeding 50 mph that caused widespread damage to local trails. The Issaquah Alps Trails Club (IATC) mobilized community efforts to address the destruction, with volunteers working long hours to clear the trails. Notably, Squak Mountain suffered severe blowdowns, requiring coordinated efforts among Washington State Parks and the City of Issaquah. The East Ridge and Summit trails experienced sections where tread was completely obscured by debris. A community coalition formed to strategize recovery, holding biweekly meetings to ensure effective collaboration.
IATC Volunteer of the Year Terry Swiakowski led an expert crew focused on restoring access to the hardest-hit areas. While progress has been made, the Old Griz and Phil's Creek trails remain in critical condition. The resilience and dedication of the local community highlight the importance of maintaining access to public lands.
