The New Irvine Public Library System
The Irvine City Council has decided to establish its own public library system, aiming to provide better services and save taxpayer money. Currently, Irvine residents contribute about $17 million annually to the Orange County Public Libraries, while only receiving $5 million in services. By creating the Irvine Public Library System, the city plans to modernize existing libraries and construct two new ones, significantly improving community access to resources. The transition will begin with branch closures this summer, including the Heritage Park and University Park branches, followed by the reopening of these locations under the new system on August 4, 2025. Residents will still have access to OCPL services during the transition, ensuring continuity in library usage.
New programs, such as reading initiatives and family storytime events, will be available during the summer. Once fully operational, residents can request an Irvine Public Library card for use at all local branches. The new system aims to meet the unique needs of the community while providing essential library services.
