Suspected 'jewelry switch' scammers from Romania arrested in Irvine

Two Romanian nationals, Dinu Adelina and Miclescu Cosmin, have been arrested in Irvine, California, for allegedly carrying out a jewelry switch scam that resulted in the theft of a gold necklace valued at $2,000. This scam involves engaging victims in conversation and replacing their valuable jewelry with fake pieces while distracting them. The Irvine Police Department has reported that the suspects may have targeted multiple victims, prompting warnings for residents to remain vigilant. After the theft, the Real Time Crime Center quickly identified the suspect vehicle, leading to a sustained investigation by the Crime Impact Unit. Detectives tracked the suspects back to Los Angeles County, where they conducted days of surveillance before apprehending them upon their return to Irvine.

The police have released the suspects' images, believing there may be additional victims of their scheme. Adelina and Cosmin are currently booked at Orange County Jail, facing charges of conspiracy and grand theft, with bail set at $500,000. Authorities continue to investigate and seek more information from anyone who may have been targeted.
