Two IUSD Students Named Edison Scholars

Two Irvine Unified School District high school seniors, Matthew Chang from Woodbridge High School and Yuyu “Winnie” Wei from Northwood High School, have been honored as 2025 Edison Scholars, receiving a substantial $50,000 scholarship from Edison International. This financial support will be available over four years, aiding their pursuit of higher education in vital STEM fields. Matthew has dedicated the past five years to environmental research at UCI, where he studies biomarkers in plants affected by climate change and engineers fungi for carbon capture. He is determined to continue his work in Environmental Science at college. Winnie has focused her research on solar panel sustainability, uncovering the rapid degradation of older panels and the environmental issues associated with their toxic disposal.

Her ambition is to delve deeper into these challenges through her studies in Applied Mathematics. The achievements of these students not only showcase their academic prowess but also their commitment to addressing critical environmental issues. Congratulations to both Matthew and Winnie for their impressive accomplishments and bright futures.
