Irvines New I-CARE Team

Irvine, CALocal News

The Irvine Police Department (IPD) has identified a significant need for mental health support, responding to nearly 2,400 related calls each year. In response, they have launched the Irvine Community Alternative Response and Engagement (I-CARE) Team, which is dedicated to handling mental health crises, homeless outreach, and nonviolent dispute resolution. This team aims to provide a compassionate and effective response to community needs that do not always require law enforcement intervention. The I-CARE Team will work in tandem with the IPD’s Mental Health Outreach Unit, ensuring that individuals in crisis receive the appropriate care. Additionally, IPD collaborates with local organizations such as the Orange County Health Care Agency and the FOR Families program to bolster community resources.

This initiative highlights the evolving role of police departments in addressing mental health and social issues, moving beyond traditional law enforcement. By prioritizing mental health support, IPD demonstrates a commitment to the well-being of Irvine residents. This approach not only enhances community safety but also fosters trust between law enforcement and the community.
