Mayor Agran Holds Public Hearing on E-Bike Safety Concerns

Mayor Agran convened a City Council meeting to address the alarming rise in e-bike collisions in Irvine, prioritizing public safety. Police Chief Michael Kent revealed that 192 e-bike accidents occurred this year, with minors responsible for 128 of these incidents, predominantly teenagers aged 13 to 16. Health providers reported a concerning increase in severe injuries, including brain injuries and fractures, among e-bike riders, drawing parallels to motorcycle accident injuries. Public comments highlighted the risks posed to pedestrians and motorists due to the erratic behavior of young e-bike riders. Parents were reminded of their legal responsibilities concerning their children's actions on e-bikes.

The Council unanimously approved a motion to instruct city staff to work with law enforcement and legal counsel to prepare a report within 45 days. This report will explore potential measures to enhance safety while adhering to state laws. The initiative aims to mitigate the growing safety concerns associated with youth e-bike usage in the community.
