Robots Helping to Map Accessibility in Irvine

Irvine, CALocal News

Irvine's City officials partner with Daxbot to deploy urban service robots that will assess curb ramps and sidewalks for accessibility. The two robots, Smokey and Turbo, are set to survey over 950 miles of sidewalks, 9,000 curb ramps, and numerous public facilities in the next few months. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The collected data will inform staff on how to prioritize and program future enhancements in public spaces. Additionally, the robots will encounter challenges faced by wheelchair users, providing valuable insights.

Residents are encouraged to interact with the robots while ensuring they have enough space to operate safely. This project reflects the City’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance urban accessibility and community engagement.
