Irvine Has Lost One of Our Local Treasures Ed Pope
Ed Pope, a dedicated educator and veteran, passed away in mid-August from complications related to a stroke he suffered six years prior. After serving in the U. S. Army during significant global events, he returned to California to pursue a successful 31-year teaching career in social studies. Ed's influence extended to volunteering at the Westminster Boxing Club, where he worked with at-risk youth for over 20 years.
He was instrumental in advocating for the Veterans Memorial Park in Irvine, successfully rallying nearly 20,000 signatures against a development project that would have jeopardized the site. His commitment to veterans and the community earned him the title of Orange County's "High School Teacher of the Year" in 1984. Ed's friends have vowed to continue his legacy of respect and honor for those who served in the military. His life exemplified integrity and service, leaving a lasting impact on countless individuals. The community mourns the loss of this local treasure.
