City Council Working to Expand Mobility Options

Irvine, CALocal News

Mayor Larry Agran and the Irvine City Council are addressing residents' traffic concerns by enhancing transportation options. They approved new shuttle routes for the Irvine CONNECT service, which are particularly aimed at students and seniors. Last year, the City introduced its first Class IV protected bikeway, enhancing cyclist safety. Additionally, the expansion of the Jeffrey Open Space Trail will include a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the I-5 Freeway, set to open next summer. During a recent Council meeting, Councilmember Betty Martinez Franco proposed a bike share program to improve connectivity among neighborhoods and business districts.

This initiative seeks to reduce vehicle trips, aligning with the City’s mobility goals. Initial docking stations will be positioned at City Hall and UCI to gauge demand and operational logistics. These measures reflect a broader commitment to sustainable transportation in Irvine.
