City sales tax hike approved

Goldendale, WALocal News

The Goldendale City Council approved a one-tenth of one percent increase in the city sales tax during their public meeting on Monday night. This tax hike, amounting to a dime per $100 spent, will allocate 80% of the revenue to the police department and 20% to fire services, with an estimated annual revenue of $60,000 to $70,000. The council also granted the Lions Club permission to sell fireworks, reflecting community support for local events. Council member Ellie Casey abstained from the sales tax vote, which will require voter approval. Chief Mike Smith reported a vehicle chase involving Officer Bracken Kruger, who arrested a driver from The Dalles for DUI and felony eluding.

The incident ended safely, with no injuries reported. The council's decisions highlight ongoing efforts to enhance public safety funding and community engagement. The next council meeting is set for July 7, after the Fourth of July holiday.
