Ihrig visits Wishram Community Council, holds QA session

Goldendale, WALocal News

The Wishram Community Council (WCC) has successfully convened its first public meeting in five years, demonstrating renewed community interest in local governance. This council, comprising President Rob Johnson and other dedicated members, meets monthly to engage citizens on pressing local issues, such as the enhancement of street lighting in partnership with KPUD. The initiative includes student involvement from Wishram School, which will utilize a smartphone app to survey the current street lights and report on their functionality. During the inaugural meeting, County Commissioner Ron Ihrig outlined the county's strategic priorities, including budget management and addressing the challenges posed by the speed limit on Highway 14, particularly concerning the safety of local families. The growing population in Wishram Heights has heightened concerns about traffic safety, leading to discussions on potential advocacy with the Department of Transportation.

The meeting also explored opportunities for improving public parks, with Treasurer Sharon Dillard suggesting applications for state grants to build essential facilities. Overall, the WCC emphasizes collaboration between community members, local government, and educational institutions to foster a safer and more engaged community. This proactive approach seeks to address both immediate concerns and long-term community development goals.
