KVH Lab tests new virtual reality technology
Klickitat Valley Health (KVH) Laboratory is collaborating with Lab Connections LLC to explore virtual reality (VR) technology for lab staff training and evaluation. This project follows revised CLIA guidelines allowing labs to utilize remote training methods instead of face-to-face observations. KVH lab manager Leitha Boutwell emphasized that VR technology could significantly enhance training effectiveness, especially for rural labs struggling to recruit staff. The U. S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates a 5% increase in laboratory jobs from 2023 to 2033, highlighting a critical workforce issue as only about 4,900 students graduate annually from training programs. Current vacancy rates in laboratories range from 7% to 11%, with some locations reporting as high as 25% unfilled positions. The challenges are more pronounced for rural labs like KVH, where distance from urban centers complicates recruitment efforts. Boutwell stated that this technology could help small labs meet training requirements and support existing staff. Testing will continue through fall 2025, aiming to address the ongoing staffing crisis in the laboratory sector.
