DNR wildfire detection cameras offer live feeds

Goldendale, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) launched live feeds from AI-assisted wildfire detection cameras in 21 high-risk locations to enhance early wildfire detection. George Geissler, DNR's state forester, highlighted the project's significance in the agency's wildfire rapid response model. The cameras provide a 360-degree view to identify fire ignitions and relay high-definition footage to Pano AI staff, who monitor the feeds around the clock. If a potential fire is detected, the team alerts DNR dispatch to deploy resources quickly. This initiative is part of a five-year pilot project funded by the Wildfire Response, Forest Restoration, and Community Resilience Account.

Despite its success in identifying fires since its 2023 launch, projected state budget cuts may impact future technological advancements. Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove stated that the wildfire crisis affects all of Washington and vowed to work with the legislature to secure necessary funding. The success of this collaboration may shape the future of wildfire management in the state.
