A burning dream come true for Tandy Hill advocates

Fort Worth, TXLocal News

The Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area celebrated a major victory as they implemented prescribed burns, marking a transformative step in ecological management in Fort Worth. The Park & Recreation Department partnered with the Fort Worth Fire Department to conduct three controlled burns in December, a first for Tandy Hills. These burns serve multiple purposes, including reducing dense vegetation, replenishing soil nutrients, and promoting a balanced ecosystem in North Texas. Jared Hall, a certified burn manager, noted that the burns aim to mitigate wildfire risks and enhance plant communities, ultimately benefiting local wildlife habitats. Don Young, founder of Friends of Tandy Hills, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m still pinching myself to make sure this is real.

” The initiative also aims to improve water filtration and carbon sequestration, showcasing the multifaceted benefits of prescribed fire. Looking ahead, the city plans additional burns in 2025 to continue fostering ecological health. This comprehensive approach highlights the importance of fire in maintaining the integrity of North Texas prairies and woodlands.
