Advocates say Fayetteville encampment sweep scattered unhoused community, cut off support networks

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Fayetteville police cleared a homeless encampment on University of Arkansas property, scattering residents and disrupting their community support networks. Jesse Buchanan from Fayetteville’s Forgotten stated that such sweeps instill fear and lead to further isolation of the unhoused. Local advocacy groups have mobilized to assist those displaced, continuing to provide essential services like food and shelter. Kristina Andazola of Seven Hills Homeless Center highlighted the importance of case management for individuals seeking stability. Jennifer Clements, who had resided at the camp since January, described it as her support system and expressed the emotional impact of its closure.

She urged the community to recognize the struggles of those experiencing homelessness and avoid judgment. Despite city efforts to address homelessness through a task force, advocates contend that no substantial changes have occurred on the ground. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by unhoused individuals in Fayetteville.
