Rogers superintendent reflects on May 26 tornado, shares renewed safety measures

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Rogers Public Schools superintendent Jeff Perry detailed the district's response to the trauma caused by the May 26, 2024, tornado, highlighting new safety protocols for future severe weather. Perry indicated that many staff members and students now cope with PTSD, leading to a comprehensive review of emergency procedures. The district has trained students and staff on where to seek shelter, with a focus on special education students who require more assistance. To enhance safety, the district has secured 60 mobile classrooms, ensuring students are moved away from danger during storms. Perry announced the construction of a specialized safe room at Greer Lingle Middle School, which was heavily impacted by last year's tornado.

Other schools will also incorporate safe rooms in future designs. This proactive approach aims to protect students and staff and underscores the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters. The district's commitment to safety reflects a broader understanding of the long-term impacts of such traumatic events.
