Fort Smith to hold public meetings ahead of May 13 election
The city of Fort Smith is actively engaging its residents ahead of the May 13 election by hosting public meetings to discuss crucial ballot proposals. These proposals include extending and rearranging existing taxes and authorizing a bond issue, which are vital for funding a federally mandated upgrade to the city's wastewater system. The cost of this project is projected to exceed $600 million, highlighting the significance of adequate funding. Lavon Morton, chairman of the Citizens Committee for Clean Water & Transparency, emphasized that the ballot will not feature any tax or sewer rate increases, aiming to keep financial burdens on citizens low. He explained that if the city can utilize sales tax for funding, it will prevent the need for higher rates.
The meetings serve as a platform for residents to voice their concerns and ask questions regarding the ballot items. The first meeting is slated for Thursday at 6 p. m. in the community room at the Fort Smith Public Library, with additional sessions scheduled for April 28 and May 5. This proactive approach by city officials underscores the importance of transparency and community involvement in local governance.
