Storm spotter classes coming to Arkansas cities ahead of severe weather season
The National Weather Service (NWS) is gearing up for severe weather season with the launch of free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training sessions across Arkansas. These programs are designed to teach residents how to effectively recognize and report severe weather, such as tornadoes and flash flooding, which are critical for enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasts. Ed Calianese, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NWS Tulsa, highlights the importance of on-the-ground reports, stating that trained observers can provide invaluable "ground truth information" that improves warning accuracy. The training sessions will cover various topics, including identifying storm structures and understanding the dangers posed by severe weather. Open to the public, these classes welcome anyone interested in becoming more informed about weather threats, regardless of prior experience.
Locations for the training include Van Buren, Fayetteville, and Fort Smith, making participation convenient for many residents. Each session typically lasts around two hours, offering a substantial overview of severe weather reporting. By empowering community members with knowledge, the NWS aims to enhance public safety and preparedness during storm season.
