Prisoner behind landmark Supreme Court case returns to Arkansas after settlement
Gregory Holt, known as Abdul Maalik Muhammad, returned to Arkansas state custody after a legal settlement ruled his transfer to a federal prison unconstitutional retaliation for his civil rights advocacy. His case gained national attention following the U. S. Supreme Court's decision in Holt v. Hobbs, which affirmed the religious liberty rights of incarcerated individuals.
The settlement stipulates that Holt will return to his previous prison unit, be assigned a comparable cell, and receive access to the courts to continue his legal work. He will also begin a job at the law library, helping other prisoners with their legal filings. Carolyn Homer, Holt's attorney, stated that the case illustrates the constraints on prison officials' discretion, particularly regarding First Amendment rights. The settlement also resolves Holt's outstanding legal fees related to copying and mailing. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of civil rights protections for prisoners.
Holt has maintained a clean record in prison, focusing on legal advocacy and helping others.
