Prairie Grove woman speaks out after husband taken into federal immigration custody

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

Maria Verde, who co-owns Del Rio Supermarket in Prairie Grove, Arkansas, struggles to keep her business running while her husband, Waldin Sanchez, is held by federal immigration authorities. Sanchez was arrested for driving without a license and careless driving after a crash led to a sobriety check, revealing his illegal immigration status. Verde reported receiving only two brief phone calls since his arrest and has been forced to seek information about his husband's case on her own. Immigration attorney Aaron Cash explained that Sanchez could pursue legal options, including asylum or cancellation of removal, depending on his circumstances. Cash observed an increase in ICE detentions stemming from minor traffic violations as local jails communicate immigration status to federal authorities.

Verde expressed gratitude for the support of her community, stating that she has formed friendships with neighbors during this ordeal. As Sanchez remains in a federal detention center in Louisiana, Verde is determined to keep the supermarket open while raising their three children. The situation highlights the challenges faced by immigrant families navigating the intersection of local law enforcement and federal immigration policy.
