UAFS food pantry seeing increase need from students and staff

Fort Smith, ARLocal News

The University of Arkansas Fort Smith (UAFS) has reported an 18% increase in food pantry usage among students from fall 2024 to fall 2025. Meighan Pendergrass, Executive Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness, highlighted that many students seeking assistance are also supporting their families. Each week, eligible individuals, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff, can receive a sack of groceries containing essential items like canned vegetables and pasta. An additional food giveaway is scheduled for Nov. 6, targeting approximately 195 students and staff, with boxes containing 16 shelf-stable items.

The pantry, located at Recreation and Wellness on campus, is also actively seeking community volunteers and donations of food and hygiene products. As local families confront increasing challenges, the UAFS food pantry aims to alleviate some of the burdens. Initiatives like the Early Bird Turkey Drive further support families in need by encouraging community donations. The growing demand for food assistance underscores the ongoing challenges faced by students and their families in the region.
