No way we can afford that 2.8 million slide bids deepen divide over Parrot Island
Fort Smith city officials are grappling with a significant funding crisis as installation costs for new slides at Parrot Island Waterpark skyrocket to nearly $2. 8 million, more than four times the initial estimate. With only $650,000 left in the budget from the previously approved $4. 2 million, Director George Catsavis suggests selling the slides to cut losses. The city's financial difficulties arise from rising construction costs and an inaccurate estimate from a former city administrator, who based the figure on consultations with the park's management company.
To date, $2. 6 million has been spent on purchasing and delivering the slides, along with $100,000 for design and engineering work. Additionally, a $1. 5 million assembly contract was signed, contributing to the budget shortfall. Supply chain issues and increased prices for materials have exacerbated the problem, with commercial construction costs rising by 15% to 20% since 2023.
Both Catsavis and Director Christina Catsavis stress the importance of fiscal responsibility, and the board has not yet voted on additional funding. The slides remain on the ground at Ben Geren Regional Park while officials deliberate on the project's future.
