SNAP funding at risk as shutdown continues Arkansans urged to stock up, seek help
The Arkansas Department of Human Services warns that ongoing federal government shutdowns may disrupt Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits if the situation extends into November. Residents are advised to identify local food pantries and reach out to family or friends for temporary food assistance during potential delays. SNAP participants should utilize any remaining funds to purchase shelf-stable foods before a possible lapse in benefits occurs. DHS Secretary Janet Mann highlighted the critical nature of SNAP, stating that even brief disruptions can severely impact families. As of September 1, more than 222,000 Arkansans received SNAP benefits, with many living below the poverty line, including 42% of households earning half the federal threshold or less.
The department reassured that other assistance programs like ARHOME and Medicaid are not expected to be immediately affected by the shutdown. Nationally, SNAP aids around 41. 7 million participants, representing 12% of the U. S. population.
The potential economic impact of SNAP disruptions could further exacerbate food insecurity, which already affects 18. 9% of Arkansas households.
