Task force targets gun crime. Separate bomb threat case leads to juvenile arrest
The Violent Crimes Task Force of the Fort Smith Police Department has arrested 12 people and filed 25 felony charges since its inception on July 29, in response to a notable increase in gun-related crimes, including drive-by shootings that resulted in one fatality. The initiative also led to the recovery of five firearms linked to these incidents. Charges faced by those arrested include aggravated robbery, battery involving a firearm, and tampering with evidence, affecting both adults and juveniles. Among the arrests was a juvenile apprehended for making threats against Kimmons Middle School, with the threat later deemed baseless. Police officials highlighted the operation as part of their ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and maintain public safety, with a full report expected at the operation's conclusion.
The department expressed gratitude to the FBI and local prosecuting authorities for their collaboration. This series of arrests reflects a significant local response to community safety concerns amid rising crime rates. The task force remains focused on investigating and addressing firearm-related violence.
